The JED T460 projector and T461 audio controllers offer a convenient system to control video and data projectors from a suitable point on a lectern, bench or wall near a speaker's location in a hall or theatre.
A Power-Point presentation (doesn't need Office to run) on the T440 and T460 is available for download: (note, it is a 12 Mbyte file) JED T440_T460.PPS

The front panel keyboard of the T460 is shown above, is 76mm by 58mm, and is mounted on either a white or black Clipsal 2000 series blank power T460 front photo white- blue point base or grid plate. Black T460 with beige keyboardBehind the window is a two-line backlit LCD screen showing system status. The T460 has an attractive white, or black, smooth escutcheon surrounding it to give an overall size of 110mm by 70mm. This covers the screw holes and can be mounted into a lectern or desk at a convenient point for the speaker to control video and data projector operations. Alternatively, the controller and front assembly can be mounted on a black or white Clipsal 2000 base block, and can be wall mounted near the operator's position.

As an option, just the adhesive backed keyboard and electronics board can be supplied without a Clipsal plate, to allow installers to mount the system on their own panel to match the decor of media control desks or wall plates in boardrooms, etc.

T460 metal with beige keyboardThe T460 is wired back to the LCD projector via an RS232 data cable, needing only three wires (TX, RX and Ground). The control codes for many hundreds of projectors are programmed into the T460 controller, and a variety of customising set-ups can be performed on the unit via the front panel keys to select different projector makes and models, and then to name video sources from a menu and allocate them to various input channels on the projector. (A connection for a fourth wire with 9 volts on it is available as a CTS or DTR line HIGH to the projector to enable RS232 transmission, as some projectors expect this input to be HIGH before allowing transmission.)

The control of audio level can be done in the projector, and audio control signals are sent to the projector along with the video source and power control signals. If a T461 audio rack is installed, it is controlled with a second serial port on the T460, and the T461 selects and controls the audio levels in step with source select signals sent to the video projector.

The normal keyboard background colour is pale blue, as shown to the right (above). An option of a "beige" background keyboard is available for the "Volume" keyboard, shown on the left (above). See larger photos: T460_Blue.jpgT460beige_black_base.jpg , T460beige45.jpg

The T460 has a choice of keyboard labels for the right-hand two keys.

The standard key-labels for the right-hand keys are "VOLUME UP" and "VOLUME DOWN". An option labels the right-hand keys "A/V Mute On" and "A/V Mute Off". This is for installations which do not run audio through the projector or control it via a T461, so the user can mute the system from the T460.

Another option labels the right-hand keys:  "Freeze On/Off" and "Mute On/Off", providing both Freeze and Mute functions to a screen. (Not available for all projectors.) Applications in meeting rooms and churches allow an image to be projected from a PC, and held there while the operator advances to the next screen, or enters information on the laptop and edits it without it being shown till ready.

Pressing both Volume keys together mutes the sound and picture. (Either yellow key restores the picture/sound)

Volume keys auto increment / decrement the audio level if a yellow key is held down. (Times are programmable.)

Note: New production is RoHS (Lead free).

T461 audio attenuator/mixer

The T461 is a 1RU high 19-inch rack mount unit, with four line level stereo RCA pairs as inputs and one line level RCA pair as output. It has an T461 with black and white T460s RS232 input and a 240 volt IEC mains connector. A 12-volt power output can power the T460. All connections are on the rear, and on the front are four LED channel indicators and screw-driver adjustable prescaler trim pots.

T461 close-up photo.

An option for the T461 adds 8 outputs.  It has eight relay contact outputs which can be used to control screen up/down functions, projector access hatch controls, room lighting pre-set selects, etc. The relays are also controlled via the RS232 secondary link from the T460 to the T461. The relay states are indicated by LEDs on the front panel of the T461. Control options include control of a C-Bus or a Dynalite lighting control system, or Quest, Kramer or Extron video switching systems.

T462-R2 & -R4 relay-box for screen/scissor-jack/room dimming T462-R2/R4 RS232 to relay box

The T462-R2 and T462-R4 are boxed RS232 relay drivers which can be driven from a T460 via the second serial port in the same way as the T461 (above). The first two relays are programmed from the T460 to lower and raise a motorised screen. The relays can switch 12 volt signals to the motor control system. (If only screen control is needed, use just the T462-R2) JED can supply a 12v 300mA power pack to run a T460/T462 pair. Order PAK12/300.

In version 2.26 and later, the relay functionality has been considerable enhanced. See below.

If scissor-jack and room light dimming relays are needed as well, order a T462-R4. Driver software is in version 2.13A and later.    (Large photo T462-R2/R4)

Application

The simplicity of operation of the T460 is its major advantage when installed in locations where a number of users/teachers/lecturers who are unfamiliar with A/V equipment, and without an audio/visual assistant/operator, need to run a "show".

They need to power up the projector, select a source, run a video or computer presentation or demonstrate some other program, or display a feed from a document or microscope camera on the video screen, and then close the system down again. Contrast the four buttons on this unit with the 20 or 30 on some IR remote controls, each one different from room to room. This unit is identical from room to room, even with a mix of different projectors.

And when the show is over, T460 controller does not walk out the door in the lecturer's pocket like IR remote controllers often do!

Operation

Here is the operating manual for the T460 ... The operation of the T460 is very logical:
  1. Turn the system on by pressing the ON/SOURCE key. The projector starts, and the LCD screen on the T460 shows the warm-up operation, either counting it down, or waiting for a signal from the projector indicating it is running. At this point the LCD screen shows the last used signal source on the upper line;
  2.
  3. If a different source is needed, keep pressing the  ON/SOURCE key until the desired source is shown by name on the screen. It rolls through however many are connected in this particular installation, showing pre-selected names for the up to eight possible sources, and skipping deselected ones;
  4.
  5. When running, use the VOLUME UP and VOLUME DOWN keys to set the desired audio level for that source. In absolute source volume systems, or, in systems using the JED T461 audio attenuator/mixer, the last used setting is remembered channel by channel and recalled when that source is re-selected. In “incremental” systems, the projector usually displays the varying audio level on the screen. These keys also control “picture/sound mute”, or "picture freeze", if selected;
  6.
  7. When the show is finished, pressing the OFF key ramps the audio down and turns off the projector. The proper warm-up and cool-down and lockout times are set for the projector, and countdown in seconds shows on the LCD screen until the unit goes to standby mode for the next cycle.

PIR, timer, or switch contact start for system control

An input is provided for a contact from a number of sources:
  1. The relay contact from a PIR (Passive InfraRed) detector in the room. This can be used for a reset of a time-out on the projector power, so that while people are in the vicinity the projector keeps running until manually turned off. Users can set a time-out period after which the projector automatically powers down if no activity is detected on the keyboard or via the PIR. The Run- time is adjustable from zero (disabled) to sixteen hours. This option is intended for classrooms and theatres where manual turnoff might be missed;
  2.
  3. The relay contact from an external LCD-screen programmable timer. T460 LCD panel timer JED sells such a timer, which allows the unit to run for up to eight timer periods in a day, on all, or just certain days of the week. This mode is supported by recent additions in the setup menu to select this mode, and also to add an optional control serial output from the second serial port to control a DVD player, so when the timer contact commands an automatic switch-on, as well as turning on the projector, after warmup, the DVD player starts and plays a pre-programmed track or tracks, repeatedly if selected. When the timer contact opens, the DVD player is sent a REJECT command to stop it, and the projector is sent an OFF command. The intended use for this is in museums, art installations, shop windows (real estate, fashion shops), malls, etc.

  4. Large view of timer (70mm square): T460_timer_150.jpg

  5. A user pushbutton contact closure input into this input can be used as a user START button. In a museum, art gallery, winery, etc, a user can push a signed push-button to start a show (and maybe also start a DVD presentation as above). The programmable Run-time (in the setup menu) pre-sets the time for the show;
  6.
  7. A PIR relay input can start a show (including DVD) when a person walks into an area. Again, use in museums, art galleries or wineries. The programmable Run-time (in the setup menu) pre-sets the time for the show.

PIN number or keyswitch to allow secure user start

In the setup menu, system start-up can prompt for either a PIN number or a keyswitch (a contact closure into the input above) to unlock the system at the start of a session. An unlock period can be pre-programmed after which the system returns to locked status. Pushing OFF relocks the system. (Thus the system can be unlocked at the start of a lecture by a PIN number, but the projector only started (with just the ON button) an hour or two later. At the end of the session, pushing OFF in the unlocked mode re-locks it. A keyswitch operates similarly.)

Installation

The wiring for the T460 system is very straightforward:
  1. Mount the T460 in or on a panel or Clipsal base on the wall. A cut-out drawing is supplied in the user manual. All wiring to the T460 is via plug and socket Phoenix connectors to the rear, and the wiring is into screw terminals, so no soldering is needed at this end. Plugs are provided with the unit, and wires are simply stripped and fixed into plug holes with grub screws. Changeover of a unit is pull-out/plug-in, and just needs a screwdriver for the mounting screws;
  2.
  3. In the simplest case, the units needs a 9 to 14 volt DC plug pack or bench supply connected to one plug (labelled +V, Gnd). Current consumption is under 100mA. A 9 volt unregulated plug pack is fine. Order part no PAK9. The voltage should not exceed 18 volts. The T461 can also supply this power; Order a PAK12/300 if powering a T462 relay box as well.
  4.
  5. Connect a three wire RS232 cable (TX, RX Ground) from the plug labelled "Projector". Wire the other end of the cable to the projector RS232 control socket input. (A fourth line, CTS is an RS232 output, always HIGH, available for some projectors which need a CTS or DTR input at a logic "1");
  6.
  7. If the JED T461 remote audio attenuator/mixer is needed, the connections between the T460 and T461 consist of three more RS232 lines (TX, RX and Ground) from the "Second RS232" connector to the rear of the T461, and power to the T460;
  8.
  9. Wire the PIR into the T460 2-pin plug, or jumper these two contacts if no PIR used, so the timer function operates.

Setup

Setting up the T460 is also very straightforward and done from the front panel  Note: Every T460 holds all codes for the many hundreds of projectors/plasmas covered, and does not need a complicated lap-top based programming setup on site. This is an advantage of having an LCD screen on the T460:
  1. Enter the setup screen by using a special 2-key combination and then entering a 4-digit PIN number;
  2.
  3. Scroll down to the projector-type screen by pressing the ON key, and select the projector manufacturer and model, and sometimes some other options;
  4.
  5. Scroll to the source setup screen and select and allocate sources by name from the list to each of the channels. Set the skipped channels at this point as well. Select a default if desired, so it always comes to a known channel on start-up;
  6.
  7. Scroll to the audio screen and select the T461 if installed, (or mute mode, if no audio control needed);
  8.
  9. Scroll to the Run-time screen and select the PIR (or last keyboard use) time-out time;
  10.
  11. Other screens set T461 channel mapping to projector mapping, a new PIN number, or a unique channel name;
  12.
  13. If a T461/T462 is used with relays, scroll to the relay times screen and set the relay times for the screen down and screen up relays to suit the motorised screen characteristics and the distance the screen should go down. Relays can also operate BEFORE a projector (e.g. for an overhead projector).

Reprogramming

The microprocessor in the T460 can be easily reprogrammed in situ via a serial cable from a laptop or notebook in a couple of minutes, if a projector is changed. Updates are posted on this web site, along with details of the download cable (in the User's Manual) and the download utility. As new projectors are added to the list, the version number will be incremented, and a list on this site will indicate what projectors are covered by which version. The large memory space in FLASH memory allows for a large number of projector choices to be included in one code version. The file type is TGU.

Projector/Plasma/LCD types covered by the T460

New projector manufacturers and model numbers are being added every week. Most manufacturers and models on the Australian market are included in the menu. Please contact a distributor or JED to determine coverage of particular ones, or see the list in the download section below.

RS485 network communications

The T460 has an switchable RS485 interface on Serial Port 2 , and this can be used for a variety of link and security applications for example: (These applications would need special programming of the T460, but the RS485 hardware can support these and other network applications. Please contact JED to discuss the possibilities.)

Linked T460 controllers for dual operator locations

The current software allows two T460s to be linked via an RS485 cable. One, the Master, directly controls the projector from its Serial 1 port, and it can still control a local T461 via its Serial 2 port. The RS485 connection to the Remote echoes what is on the Master's screen to the Remote. Both keyboards operate in parallel, connected via the cable, so that either T460 can power up or down, set channels or mute, and raise and lower audio levels. (The cable could be a shielded  twisted-pair, or some lines in a CAT5 cable, including one twisted pair for signals and a ground. Power for the remote can also be fed down a CAT5 cable, via several pairs in parallel. Distance could be a hundred meters.)

This mounts a T460 on a desk or on a wall at a 45 degree angle to the desk (or wall). It is finished in white or black power coating and has mounting screw holes and a cable entry hole in one panel, allowing it to mount on a desk with holes and mounts through the bottom, or to mount on a wall with cable and mounting screws through the back. . Enhanced relay system for screens, dimmer and video switchers

The relay system functionality has been considerably enlarged in release 2.26 (and later):

T465 Microphone and radio input line mixerT465

This unit, mounted in a matching Clipsal panel similar to the T460, has two volume controls on the front, and is positioned in the stereo line output from the T461 (or projector audio output) to the PA amplifier. This allows a lectern microphone and an audience participation / roving radio mic channel input as well. Mic and radio audio operates independently of the T460 On or Off state.

It is powered by a 12 volt source, eg the 12 volt regulated power available from the back of a T461, or a PAK12/300 plug-pack. (It draws 75mA)

The left hand volume control is for the microphone input, and this is added to both channels equally. Rear preset switches allows the gain for the microphone channel to be preset in 6 steps of 10dB (0 to 50db). Inputs can be balanced or unbalanced (a switch on the back can ground one channel). Phantom power at 12 volts can be connected to the balanced microphone inputs to power a phantom-powered microphone preamplifier. Another switch controls a base-cut switch to reduce breath pops, etc.

It also takes a radio microphone input, and mixes it to both channels as well, via the right-hand volume control.

The advantage of such an audio control panel is that the lecturer does not need access to mic volume controls on the audio amplifier (which might be across the room in a secure rack), and can control the roving mic channel from the lectern as well.

A rear stereo log pot allows the T461/projector input level to be preset. (This signal level is adjustable via the "volume" buttons on the T460.)

A second stereo output is available to feed a cassette tape recorder to allow taping of lectures.

Futures: T450 Timer for shop windows, malls, museums, etc

Another controler, the T450 is in design, targeted more at shop fronts, exhibition spaces and shopping malls and other "general public" control applications. This version is "timer" orientated, where the keyboard is used to set ON and OFF times at times of the day, days of the week, allowing for weekends and holidays. (In the mean-time an external timer is available for timer based applications .... see above.)

Futures: T470 IR control and keyboard system for DVD/VCR/Combo control

This system pairs with a T460, and controls two IR devices (typically a VCR and a DVD), or a Combo DVD/VCR unit, via stick-on IR tranmitters. The 20-key keyboard has a program-selection group of keys (Title, Enter and Arrow keys) and transport control keys (Play, Stop, Pause, and fwd and reverse keys).

T466 projector wiring and response testerT466 comms tester

This little device is an aid for installers. It connects between the T460 and a projector, or between the T460 and a T461 or T462. The green LEDs light to show the rest state (minus 9 v) on each line. Then when the T460 sends out a command, the red LED flashes. When the projector or T461/2 replies, the yellow LED flashes. (The flashes are bright, 1/2 second flashes even with millisecond pulses, due to two FET pulse stretchers.) Low in cost, and supplied in a strong box, ready for all tech toolboxes.  T466 photo.

What's inside the T460

The T460 is based on the Wilke Tiger controller, a small module running multi-tasking compiled BASIC in a 20 Mhz CPU, with 512Kbyte of FLASH memory. This unit can be used for any other remote control tasks, and can be customised for other users, who can have their own keyboard with different text and graphics. Customers or JED can reprogram the T460 for unique other applications. Tiger details are on JED's Tiger page. Go to Tigers.

How to buy the T460

Customers, if you are interested in the T460, call one of the distributors below, or if your favourite audio/visual distributor is NOT listed, call them, pass on this www site, and invite them to call Ed Schoell. We wish to cover all areas with distributors and installers familiar with these devices. (While we are prepared to sell direct to customers all over the world, our preference is that customers buy via a local, experienced distributor, who can then offer installation and training as part of the transaction. JED does NOT offer these services ... we just make and program them ... that keeps us busy enough!)

When ordering, make sure to specify colour (black or white), whether a matching base is needed, and whether a plug-pack power supply is needed.

Distributors worldwide ... if you are interested in the T460, call/email Ed Schoell at +61 (0) 3 9762 3588 to be added to the list below and to our direct mail distributor recommendations: eschoel@jedmicro.com.au
